简介：Outofthefifties'B'Science-Fictionmonstermovies,thiseasilyranksasthebest.It'smostnotableasthefilmthatALIENisanunareditedremakeof,thusgivingitacertainhistoricalsignificance.Theintriguingplotisabouttherescueoftheonlymaroonedsurvivor(Col.Carruthers)ofanill-fatedexpeditiontoMars.Theauthorities,pig-headedasusual,falselyassumethathemurderedhisfellowcrewmembers,sothathe'dhavemorevisionstosurvive;henceheisbeingbroughtbacktoEhtofaceurt-mialformurder.(Thereisalsoasomewhatinterestingplotreversalhere:MostmoviesofthisnatureusuallybeginwiththeshipleavingEh,enroutetoitsotherworlddestination,while,inthiscase,the"story"isbelievedfinished,andbeginsasthecharacterstake-offfromtheotherpla,returningtoEh).AstherescueshipisleavingMars,alurking,ominousshadowisseeninthelowerpment.(Afrightening,atmosphericmoment,acplishedthroughsheerenomyandsimplicity).Carruthersinsistsofhisinnocencetohisfellowcaptors,claimingthathisoriginalcrewmateswereslaughteredbyahostile,unseenpresenceonthedesoluteredpla,butthree-guessesastotheirreactiontohisunusualplea.Naturally,hecan'tveit,and50'sspaceauthoritieswerenotveryaliennscienceatthetime.(Asaside-thought,"unseenmenace"mayremindyouofthathighly"original"BLAIRWITCH).Aseveryonesacksout,ahaplesssupportingcharactorwhosenameisatthebottomofthecastinglist(guesswhatwillhappentohim?)hearssomethinginthelowerpment.Despiteyourfutile"don'tgodownthere,youjerk!"pleas,hedoesjustthat,andisappriatelykilled(morelikethoroughlyobliterated)bytheshadowyfigurewithinsatiablebloodlustonitsmind.Inthevictim'scase,derelictionofdutyandsheerwardlinesswouldhavebeenthewisedecision.Thesceneisactuallywell-directed(forachange)anddevelopsmuchsuspense,astheentirefilmsurprisinglydoes.Thecrewfinallycatchesonthattheyhaveanunwantedshipcrasheronboard,andtryeverypossiblemeansattheirdisposaltoeliminateit,buttheunknowncreatureseemstoppingananti-deathattitude.Provingtobeanevenmoreclever,worthyadversary,'IT!'alsohidesoutintheventilationshaftsoftheship(nowthatshouldringabell).Cahn'sforcefuldirectiongeneratesnsiderabletensionasthemalevolentstowawayworksitswayupfromonelevelofthenfinedshiptothenext,eventuallyleavingtheremainingcharacterstrappedatthe.Themovie'ssuspenseisbluntandrighttothepoint:"IT!'hastokillthemorstarve,hencetheyhavetokill"IT!"ordie.Nothinglikethose"notwowaysaboutit"choices.Rentit,orcheckforitoncableifyouwishtoknowtheoute.Foralow-budgetquickie,IT!isquiteimpressiveandmemorable.Thedreadedsenseofclaustrophobictension,renderingthecharacters'helplessentrapment,ishighlyeffective.Thisisaductioninwhichthelimitedbudgetandsmallsetsactuallyworkinfavoroftheplot'sscaryambience.Theblack&whitephotography(Yes,it'soneofthose!)helpstoenhanceitsdark,creepymood,andthesenseofapprehensionisquitehigh.(Moderndaylorfreaksneverseemtotakethatintonsideration).Theplotisalsosomewhatcynicallyironic:Ifthecreaturehadn'tstowedawayontheship,Carrutherswouldhavemostlikelybeenfoundguiltyofthechargesagainsthim.Theintelligentscript(seewhatImeanabout"rareity")waspennedbynotedScience-FictionauthorJeromeBixby(rememberTwilightZone's"It'saGoodLife")?Thepicture'stauteditingeliminatesanyextraneousdross.(ALIENtendedtodraginitsfirsthourwithitssophomoricdialogue,andwhydidithavetoincludethatstupidandultimatelyunter-ductivesub-plotofAshbeingarobot,andfurtherdraggingthestorydowntoanotherbigbadnspiracycliche?UNNECESSARY!!!)DirectorCahnastutelykeepstherubber-suitedmonsteroff-screenandintheshadowsthrough-outmostoftheceedings,keepingyourparanoidimaginationonnstantalert.Unfortunately,perhapsatthestudio'smercialinsistance,itisalittleover-revealedattheclimax,butIhaven'tclaimedthistobetheperfectmasterpiece.Theperformances,thoughnothingaward-winning,areneverthelessolenoughsothatonebeessincerelyncernedastotheirfates.Notmanymoviesinrecenttimesevereclosetoachievingthat.Theycanbeover-ducedfromheretoeternity,andusuallyonlysueedinbeinggloriouslyannoying.Thisfilm'sstoryisnotreallytotallyoriginal(whatis?),foritisbasedonA.E.VanVogt's"VOYAGEOFTHESPACEBEAGLE."AllALIENfanaticsshouldtrackdownanoldusedpytoseewheretheinitialinfluencecamefrom.Aslongasyou'renotcravinganotherCGIwind-ding,youmayfinditworthwhile.Justdon'texpectthewomentobeRipleyprecursors.Thiswasstillthesock-knittingfifties,sadtosay.
